For more than a decade we have provided with education institutions to provide strategic and organizational consulting services. Our expert teams partner to enhance impact, strengthen leadership capacity across roles and levels, and align culture, structure, and decision-making to support long-term success
Our approach combines deep respect for academic culture with rigorous thinking, strategic insight, and a long-term commitment to building institutional leadership capacity. We bring actionable, research-based approaches that enhance creativity and innovation, create greater transparency, identify efficiencies and improve use of resources and enhance culture, all in service of the university mission. Core areas of expertise are:
Organizational Assessments
Clarity, Alignment, and Improved Performance.
We conduct impartial, research-informed organizational assessments for universities, schools, academic divisions, and administrative units. We help leaders understand what work is happening, how effectively it’s being carried out, and what structural or operational changes will create the greatest impact.
An organizational assessment offers an objective, external view of how teams are structured, how work flows across functions, and where challenges are limiting execution. Our process includes confidential 1:1 interviews with team members and key stakeholders to surface what’s working, what’s getting in the way, and what needs to change. We then deliver clear, actionable recommendations tailored to your context, constraints, and desired future state.
To ensure progress and impact, we can also provide:
Change management and communication plans
Team workshops and leadership alignment sessions
Custom-designed surveys to gather broad input efficiently
Multi-year benchmarking using the Denison Culture Survey.
Outcomes you might expect include improvements in productivity and performance; morale and climate; systems, communications, and processes; role clarity and needed capabilities; leadership; organizational design; and organizational dependencies and redundancies.

We reviewed the entire academic affairs function for a state university with six colleges serving more than 18,000 students. Our review included the provost office, dean’s office, and departmental level. We created metrics for estimating volume of work and recommended improvements that improved academic affairs across the university.
-
A School of Design and Architecture at an R1 university had grown organically and the dean was looking for ways to consolidate and centralize administrative activities for enhanced performance and cost effectiveness. We interviewed all of the staff and provided an updated organizational structure designed to enhance staff engagement and also take advantage of university shared services.
-
An online community college poised for its next stage of growth approached us for a robust design for its future state. Our organizational assessment included college-wide interviews, focus groups, and a survey ensuring the entire community provided input into the new design, accompanied by a change management plan.

A business school challenged by morale issues and faced with an accreditation challenge came to us looking for support to align faculty and deepen their engagement. Working closely with human resources, we conducted a culture survey and interviewed all faculty and staff. The resulting recommendations served as the basis for a two-day team-building workshop that we conducted on site. One year later, a new culture survey showed an increase across every measure, with an overall average increase of 43%.
Leadership Development
& Team Alignment
Stronger Leaders. Stronger Institutions.
We design and deliver customized leadership development programs, workshops, and offsites that strengthen leadership capacity, align teams, and accelerate progress on your most important priorities.
Our programs are built for the realities of academic environments—complex stakeholders, shared governance, competing demands, and high expectations for impact. Each engagement is tailored to your goals and can include curated readings, simulations, case studies, and applied tools that translate directly to day-to-day leadership challenges.
1) Start with a focused needs analysis
Begin with a discovery process to understand the challenges, opportunities, and context of your group, unit or institution. This may include interviews, focus groups, or “listening tours” designed to build trust, surface real constraints, and establish the foundation for buy-in and meaningful change.
2) Design a program built for your people and your priorities
Drawing on more than 30 years of experience designing leadership development and coaching programs in higher education, we create a customized learning experience that addresses your real-world needs—strengthening leadership skills, moving beyond conflict, improving decision-making, and building alignment across leadership teams.
3) Deliver practical learning that drives measurable outcomes
Participants leave with shared language, actionable strategies, and tools they can use immediately—improving how they lead, collaborate, and execute together.

A university president in her third year wanted a unique and impactful offsite for her senior leadership team. We developed a custom two-day workshop focused on inspiration, development, and taking action on the strategic plan. This was followed by a second workshop in the following year to enhance accountability.

On behalf of the Provost’s office we conducted a needs assessment, then designed and delivered a leadership development program for a university-wide team of administrative deans located across five schools. This program focused on individual leadership development, leading through change, and influence and communication. It created a common language and experience that enhanced collaboration and effectiveness.

A small university was in need of aligning its faculty and senior administration on cost-cutting measures, however longstanding conflict between these two groups meant that progress was not made. We conducted a “listening tour” and then developed a targeted workshop that included an organizational history exercise, strengths appreciation, and tools for managing difficult conversations. It provided the reset needed to create productive conversations to help the faculty and administration move forward together.

A scientific institute with an interdisciplinary focus had achieved its initial goals and needed support to create a vision for its next decade. However after some time the internal committee still didn’t have the buy-in to move forward. We conducted interviews, online and in-person workshops, and external benchmarking to map the environment, identify strengths, weaknesses, opportunities and threats, and evaluate multiple future scenarios. This work was then brought together in a vision document for faculty input and buy-in, and then a full strategic plan was delivered.
